The Best Places to Take Graduation Pictures in Carbondale, Illinois for SIU & JALC Students
Graduation photos are about so much more than a cap and gown. They capture an entire season of life. The late nights studying, the friendships, the stress, the growth, and the excitement of finally reaching the finish line.
Whether you are graduating from Southern Illinois University or John A. Logan College, Carbondale and the surrounding Southern Illinois area have so many beautiful places that make graduation sessions feel meaningful and personal.
One thing I love about photographing graduates in Southern Illinois is that you can get such a variety of looks in a short amount of time. You can combine iconic campus landmarks with scenic nature spots, downtown locations, and places that simply meant something to you during your college years.
As a local Southern Illinois photographer, these are some of my favorite graduation photo locations for SIU and JALC students.
The SIU Clock Tower
For SIU graduates, the clock tower is one of the most iconic graduation photo spots on campus. It instantly gives that classic college graduation feel and is one of those locations that will always feel nostalgic years from now.
There is just something special about taking photos in the place where you spent years learning, growing, struggling through exams, building friendships, and figuring out who you are becoming.
The clock tower area works beautifully for:
Traditional cap and gown photos
Walking shots across campus
Friend group graduation photos
Champagne pops
Candid celebratory moments
The architecture and surrounding campus scenery photograph especially beautifully during golden hour.
The New SIU Welcome Center
The newer welcome center area has quickly become one of my favorite spots for graduation sessions. It has a clean, modern feel while still feeling very connected to campus.
This location works especially well for students wanting a more polished and elevated look to their photos. I especially love it for:
Management and business graduates
Nursing and healthcare students
Graduate students
Students wanting a professional vibe mixed with candid moments
The landscaping, architecture, and open lighting make this area photograph beautifully.
SIU Campus Locations That Matter to You
Beyond the iconic spots, I always encourage students to think about the places that actually mattered during their college experience.
Maybe that is:
Your department building
The coffee shop you practically lived in
Campus Lake
A favorite study spot
The place where you met your best friends
The building tied to your major
Those personal details are often what make graduation sessions feel the most meaningful.
Campus Lake & Nature Areas
One thing SIU has that many universities do not is beautiful scenery built right into campus life.
Campus Lake and nearby nature areas are perfect for grads wanting a softer and more relaxed feel to their photos. The water, trees, walking paths, and sunset lighting create such a beautiful backdrop.
These spots work especially well for:
Spring graduates
Couple graduation sessions
More candid sessions
Students wanting less crowded locations
Evergreen Park
Evergreen Park is one of my favorite spots in Carbondale because it gives so much variety in one location.
You get:
Open fields
Trees
Walking paths
Bridges
Water
Gorgeous sunset lighting
This is a great option for grads wanting both scenic portraits and more relaxed candid moments. It also works really well if family members or kids are joining for part of the session.
Canon Park in Carterville
Canon Park is such an underrated location for graduation sessions. It has a peaceful feel with water views, greenery, and a cute little bridge that photographs beautifully.
I especially love recommending this location for grads who want something timeless and less centered around campus itself while still keeping that Southern Illinois feel.
Downtown Carbondale
Downtown Carbondale can be such a fun option for grads wanting something a little more modern or editorial.
The brick walls, coffee shops, sidewalks, murals, and local businesses add a lot of personality and variety to photos.
This location works especially well for:
Creative majors
Business graduates
Fashion-forward sessions
Casual outfit changes
Students wanting a more urban feel
JALC Students: Your Session Does Not Have to Look Like Everyone Else’s
Even though SIU has some iconic graduation spots, I always encourage JALC students to think outside the box and choose locations that feel personal to them too.
Some of the best graduation sessions happen in places connected to your real life and memories, not just campus landmarks.
That could look like:
A local park
A walking trail
Your workplace
A downtown location
A coffee shop
Somewhere tied to your future career
Your graduation session should feel like you.
Tips for Graduation Sessions
Bring Things That Represent Your Degree
Some ideas include:
Stethoscopes
Books
Laptops
Sports equipment
Honor cords or medals
Champagne
Decor tied to your major
These small details help personalize your gallery and tell more of your story.
Golden Hour Makes a Huge Difference
Sunset lighting almost always creates the softest and most flattering look for graduation sessions. Early morning can also work beautifully for avoiding crowds on campus.
Final Thoughts
The best graduation photos are not necessarily taken in the fanciest locations. They are taken in places that feel connected to your story.
Whether that means walking through SIU’s campus one last time, celebrating by Campus Lake, exploring downtown Carbondale, or choosing a scenic Southern Illinois location that simply feels like you, your graduation session should reflect this season of life honestly.
And honestly, some of the best photos usually happen in the in-between moments anyway. The laughter after the champagne pop. The walk back to the car. Your family cheering you on. The moment it finally hits you that after all the hard work… you really did it.
Congratulations to all the SIU and JALC graduates out there. 🎓
