What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos in Southern Illinois

Tips to help you feel confident, comfortable, and completely like yourself

One of the most common questions I get before an engagement session is: “What should we wear?” And honestly, I get it. You want to feel like yourself, but also look your best — and it can be hard to know what will photograph well, what matches the season, and what fits the vibe.

So here’s a little guide to help you figure it out. These are my go-to tips when helping couples prep for their session. And remember, the most important thing is that you feel comfortable and confident in whatever you choose.

Stick to neutral or earthy tones
Soft colors like ivory, beige, olive green, rust, dusty blue, and tan tend to photograph beautifully in natural light and outdoor settings. They complement the Southern Illinois landscape without clashing with it. Think subtle textures and gentle tones that won’t distract from your connection.

Coordinate, don’t match
Try to choose outfits that go well together without looking too identical. For example, if one of you wears a patterned dress or shirt, the other can pull a color from that pattern to wear something solid. Layers, textures, and accessories can also help add variety while keeping things cohesive.

Dress for the location and season
Are we going to a vineyard? A nature trail? A college campus? Your outfit should match the vibe of the place. Flowy dresses work beautifully in open fields and vineyards, while jeans and cozy sweaters are perfect for fall walks or forest trails. If we’re shooting in the summer, go light and breathable. In the cooler months, layering is your best friend.

Bring two outfits if you’d like
A lot of couples love having both a dressed-up and a more casual option. We can start with something more elevated, maybe a dress and button-up combo, and then switch to something a bit more relaxed and playful toward the end of the session. Just let me know ahead of time so we can plan for it!

Be mindful of shoes
We may be walking through grass, gravel, or uneven ground, so make sure your shoes are comfortable and easy to move in. If you want to wear heels, I always recommend bringing a pair of flats or sandals for walking in between spots.

The little things matter
Fresh nails, lint-rolled clothes, and clothing that fits well can make a big difference. It doesn’t need to be perfect, just thoughtfully chosen. And if you want to do something like a champagne toast, bring it along, props like blankets, coffee mugs, or flowers can add a fun and personal touch.

Bonus tip
You don’t need to reinvent yourself for these photos. The goal isn’t to look like a model on Pinterest, it’s to capture you as you are right now, in love and excited for what’s ahead. When you feel like yourself, the joy comes through in every photo.

Still unsure?
I’m always happy to help. If you want to send over a few outfit options for feedback, I’d love to help you choose. I also have a few inspiration boards I can send your way if you want help getting started.

Let’s make your session feel like you, relaxed, happy, and beautiful.
